ABSTRACT

La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo analizar los efectos directos e indirectos del apoyo social, la soledad y la vulnerabilidad percibida en la satisfacción de vida (sv) de dos grupos de personas mayores en México, uno de 60 a 69 años de edad y el otro de 70 a 99. Se contó con una muestra no probabilística de 4.433 personas mayores, 61.8 % fueron mujeres y 38.2 % hombres. Se utilizaron los siguientes instrumentos: la escala de soledad de la Universidad de California; la escala de Red Social de Lubben (lsns-6) para evaluar el apoyo social percibido; la Escala de Vulnerabilidad Percibida de Myall et al.; la escala de Satisfacción con la Vida de Diener et al., así como un cuestionario sociodemográfico. Los resultados mostraron un buen ajuste de los modelos, en los que se aprecia que para ambos grupos es mayor la varianza explicada de sv al relacionar apoyo social con soledad y vulnerabilidad, que si se mide el efecto directo del apoyo sobre sv. Esta investigación aporta elementos para el desarrollo de programas y políticas públicas que contribuyan al bienestar de personas mayores.


This research analyzed the direct and indirect effects of social support, loneliness and perceived vulnerability on life satisfaction (lf) of two groups of elderly adults in Mexico, one aged 60 to 69 years and the other from 70 to 99. There was a non-probabilistic sample of 4.433 older adults ­61.8 % were women, and 38.2 % were men­. The following instruments were used: the Loneliness Scale of the University of California; the Lubben Social Network scale (lsns-6) to assess perceived social support; the Perceived Vulnerability Scale (pvs) of Myall et al.; the Satisfaction with Life scale of Diener et al., and a sociodemographic questionnaire. The results showed a good fit of the models, which show that the explained variance for both groups of lf is more significant when relating social support with loneliness and vulnerability than if the direct effect of support on lf is measured. This research provides elements for developing programs and public policies that contribute to the wellbeing of the elderly.


O objetivo desta pesquisa foi analisar os efeitos diretos e indiretos do apoio social, solidão e vulnerabilidade percebida na satisfação com a vida (sv) de dois grupos de idosos no México, um grupo entre 60 e 69 anos e outro entre 70 e 99 anos. Contouse com uma amostra não probabilística de 4.433 idosos, sendo 61.8 % mulheres e 38.2 % homens. Foram utilizados os seguintes instrumentos: a escala de solidão da Universidade da Califórnia; a Escala de Rede Social de Lubben (lsns-6) para avaliar o suporte social percebido; a Escala de Vulnerabilidade Percebida (pvs) de Myall et al.; a escala Satisfação com a Vida de Diener et al., bem como um questionário sociodemográfico. Os resultados mostra-ram um bom ajuste dos modelos, onde pode-se observar que para ambos os grupos a variância explicada da své maior quando se relaciona apoio social com solidão e vulnerabilidade do que quando se mede o efeito direto do apoio na sv. Esta pesquisa fornece elementos para o desenvolvimento de programas e políticas públicas que contribuam para o bem-estar dos idosos.

Resumen La realización de actividad física desde la infancia y a lo largo de la vida adulta, permite que se mantenga un perfil de riesgo bajo respecto a numerosos padecimientos. El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar las dificultades que generan la inactividad física en niños, para lo cual se contó con una muestra de 2,621 niños y niñas de 13 ciudades del país, 3,754 padres de estos niños, y 134 entrenadores de diferentes escuelas presentes en la República Mexicana. Para obtener la información de esta población, se utilizó un cuestionario de 17 preguntas abiertas y cerradas, el cual fue una adaptación del instrumento: State of Play: Youth Sports Survey (The Aspen Institute, 2018), mientras que a los padres y madres de familia se les preguntó cuáles consideraban que podrían ser las principales dificultades que enfrentaban para fomentar la actividad física y/o deportiva en sus hijos e hijas, finalmente a sus entrenadores se les preguntaron las razones principales por la que los niños no practican deportes o actividad física. Los resultados mostraron que, en la muestra general de niños, el aspecto principal que genera su inactividad física se relaciona con el cumplimiento de responsabilidades; los padres mencionaron como causa principal la falta de tiempo, y los entrenadores el mal uso de la tecnología.


Abstract Physical activity from childhood and throughout adult life allows a low-risk profile to be maintained compared to many conditions. This study aimed to identify the difficulties that lead to physical inactivity in children. For the study, there was a sample of 2,621 children from 13 cities in the country, 3,754 parents of these children, and 134 coaches from different schools in the Mexican Republic. A questionnaire of 17 open and closed questions was used to obtain children's information; the questionnaire was an adaptation of the instrument State of Play: Youth Sports Survey (The Aspen Institute, s.f.). Parents were asked what they felt might be the main challenges they had in fostering physical and/or sporting activity in their children. Finally, coaches were asked the main reasons why children do not play sports or physical activity. In the general sample of children, the results showed that the main aspect of their physical inactivity relates to responsibilities; parents mentioned, as the main cause, the lack of time, and coaches reported misused the technology.


Resumo A realização de atividade física desde a infância e ao longo da vida adulta, permite que seja mantido um perfil de baixo risco em relação a muitas doenças. O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar as dificuldades que a inatividade física gera nas crianças, para a qual houve uma amostra de 2.621 crianças de 13 cidades do país, 3.754 eram os pais dessas crianças, e 134 eram treinadores de diferentes escolas presentes na República Mexicana. Para a obtenção das informações das crianças, foi utilizado um questionário com 17 questões abertas e fechadas, que foi uma adaptação do instrumento: Estado do jogo: Youth Sports Survey (The Aspen Institute, sd), enquanto os pais eram questionados sobre o que eles consideravam ser as principais dificuldades que enfrentavam para promover a atividade física e/ou esportiva entre seus filhos, e finalmente, os treinadores foram questionados sobre os principais motivos pelos quais as crianças não participam de esportes ou atividade física. Os resultados mostraram que, na amostra geral de crianças, o principal aspecto que gera sua inatividade física está relacionado ao cumprimento de responsabilidades; os pais citaram a falta de tempo como a principal causa e o uso indevido da tecnologia pelos treinadores.

Abstract Introduction Older adults are not only at a higher medical risk during the COVID-19 pandemic, but they may also be a group particularly vulnerable to mental health diminishing. Objective To analyze the effect of some sociodemographic factors (sex and age) and medical conditions (diabetes and hypertension) on mental health and concerns about COVID-19 in a sample of older adults. Method A non-probabilistic sample of 2,992 older adults (37.7% men and 62.3% women) was selected, with an average age of 70.45 years (SD = 7.31). Participants were given the Impact of Event Scale-6 (IES-6), the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), a questionnaire of concerns about COVID-19, and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Participants' answers were captured via Google Forms. Results The results showed that women had greater concerns about COVID-19 than men. The findings in general showed significant effects, with women showing higher scores in depressive symptoms, anxiety, and greater stress generated in addition by the impact of the event. Differences concerning event-related stress and depression were found in relation to subgroups by age. Discussion and conclusion These finding could serve for the planning and development of strategies that provide attention to the mental health of this population group.


Resumen Introducción Los adultos mayores no sólo presentan un mayor riesgo médico durante la pandemia de COVID-19, sino que también pueden ser particularmente vulnerables a la disminución de la salud mental. Objetivo Analizar el efecto de algunos factores sociodemográficos (sexo y edad) y condiciones médicas (diabetes e hipertensión) sobre la salud mental y las preocupaciones sobre COVID-19 en una muestra de adultos mayores. Método Se seleccionó una muestra no probabilística de 2,992 adultos mayores (37.7% hombres y 62.3% mujeres), con una edad promedio de 70.45 años (DE = 7.31). Los participantes recibieron la Estala de Impacto de Evento-6, el Cuestionario de Salud del Paciente-9, el Trastorno de Ansiedad Generalizada-7, un cuestionario de preocupaciones sobre COVID-19 y un cuestionario sociodemográfico. Resultados Las mujeres presentaron mayores preocupaciones por COVID-19 que los hombres. Las respuestas de los participantes se capturaron en Google Forms. Resultados En general, los hallazgos mostraron efectos significativos, siendo las mujeres quienes presentaron puntuaciones más altas en síntomas depresivos y ansiedad, así como mayor estrés asociado a evento. Además, se encontraron efectos diferenciados por subgrupos de edad en relación con estrés asociado a evento y síntomas depresivos. Discusión y conclusión Estos hallazgos pudieran ser útiles para planificar y desarrollar estrategias que brinden atención a la salud mental de este grupo de población.

Resumen En este estudio se analizó el efecto del desarrollo positivo sobre la contribución en jóvenes, y se identificaron las diferencias entre los jóvenes que han realizado actividades de voluntariado y los que no las han realizado; además se analizó la activación de las neuronas espejo. Participaron 121 universitarios, 28.9% hombres y 71.1% mujeres, con una media de edad de 21.51 años. Se utilizó la escala de Desarrollo Positivo en Adolescentes y de Contribución, además de un instrumento conformado por dos conjuntos de estímulos visuales. Los resultados corroboraron el efecto de las 5 c's sobre la contribución y se encontraron diferencias significativas en la escala de carácter y en dos dimensiones de contribución, donde los jóvenes que realizan actividades de voluntariado puntuaron más alto que aquellos que no las realizan. Se comprobó que existe activación en la zona correspondiente a las neuronas espejo, lo cual se relaciona con procesos empáticos. Se concluye que existe una relación entre las actividades de voluntariado y el desarrollo positivo en jóvenes universitarios.


Abstract The study analyzed the effect of positive development on contribution in young people and identified the differences between those who have done volunteer work and those who have not. It also studied the activation of the mirror neurons system. Participants were 121 university students, 28.9% male and 71.1% female, with an average age of 21.51. The Positive Youth Development Scale and the Contribution Scale were used, in addition to an instrument made up of two sets of visual stimuli. The results confirmed the effect of the 5 Cs on the contribution dimension and significant differences were found in the character scale and in two dimensions of contribution, in which young people who do volunteer work got higher scores than those who do not. The study confirmed that there was activation in the zone corresponding to the mirror neurons system, which is related to empathetic processes, and concluded that there was a relation between volunteering activities and the positive development of university students.


Resumo Neste estudo, foi analisado o efeito do desenvolvimento positivo sobre a contribuição em jovens e foram identificadas as diferenças entre os jovens que realizaram atividades de voluntariado e os que não as realizaram; além disso, foi analisada a ativação dos neurônios espelho. Participaram 121 universitários, 28.9 % homens e 71.1% mulheres, com uma média de idade de 21.51 anos. Foi utilizada a Escala de Desenvolvimento Positivo em Adolescentes e de Contribuição, ainda de um instrumento conformado por dois conjuntos de estímulos visuais. Os resultados corroboraram o efeito das 5 c's sobre a contribuição e foram verificadas diferenças significativas na escala de caráter e em duas dimensões de contribuição, em que os jovens que realizam atividades de voluntariado pontuaram mais alto que aqueles que não as realizam. ABSTRACT

El objetivo de la presente investigación fue determinar las diferencias en sintomatología depresiva, violencia intrafamiliar y agresión en 801 adolescentes y jóvenes con diferentes niveles de exposición a videojuegos con y sin contenidos violentos. La media de edad de los participantes fue de 17.5 años, el 55.4% eran hombres y 44.6% mujeres. Para evaluar la sintomatología depresiva se utilizó la Cédula del Centro de Estudios Epidemiológicos, para la violencia intrafamiliar, se diseñó una escala de 16 reactivos que miden: agresión verbal, agresión física, humillación y respeto; en cuanto a la agresión, se diseñó una escala tipo Likert de 13 reactivos con cuatro opciones de respuesta: nunca a siempre. Respecto al uso de videojuegos, se preguntó si los utilizan o no, motivo por el cual los juegan, el tiempo aproximado a la semana que pasan jugándolos, si los videojuegos que utilizan tienen contenido violento y de qué tipo. Los resultados mostraron diferencias significativas en las variables evaluadas respecto al nivel de exposición de videojuegos con contenido violento, donde de manera general los adolescentes y adultos jóvenes que reportaron una mayor exposición (de 11 horas o más por semana) presentaron mayor sintomatología depresiva, agresión y violencia intrafamiliar que aquellos con un menor nivel de exposición.


The objective of this research was to determine differences on depressive symptoms, family violence and aggression in 801 adolescents and young people with different levels of exposure to video games with and without violent content. The average age of the participants was 17.5 years, of which 55.4% were male and 44.6% female. To assess depressive symptoms, the Certificate Center for Epidemiologic Studies was used, and for domestic violence, a scale was designed from 16 reactants that measure verbal and physical aggression, humiliation and respect; with regards to aggression, a Likert scale was designed from 13 reactants with four-response options: from never to always. And with regards to the use of video games, it was asked whether they use them or not, the motive why they like them, the approximate time a week playing them, and whether those video games have violent content and its type. The results showed significant differences in the variables evaluated as to the level of exposure to video games with violent content, which generally teenagers and young adults who reported higher exposure (more than 11 hours a week) had higher depressive symptoms, aggression and domestic violence than those with a lower level of exposure.

ABSTRACT

Depression is an emotional upset that disrupts the psycho-affective sphere and is associated with different risk behaviors, as alcohol and tobacco use, among young people. The aim of this study is to analyze the differences on depression in four groups of high school and college students (1. alcohol users, 2. tobacco users, 3. alcohol and tobacco non-users, and 4. alcohol and tobacco users). A census was conducted with 116 214 students with a mean age of 15 and 19 years. Heavy alcohol and tobacco use was more frequent in men. A factorial ANOVA analysis was used to compare depressive symptoms between heavy drinkers (4 or more drinks per occasion) and heavy smokers (4 or more cigarettes per day) by sex and school level. More depressive symptoms were found in college students (M = 9.7) than in the high school ones (M = 9.5, p<0.05). The group of alcohol and tobacco users showed higher levels of depressive symptoms (M=11.3) than the alcohol only (M=10.5) and tobacco only users (M=10.7). Women showed more depressive symptoms (M=10.3) than men. Results point out the need for early detection and intervention, and for more monitoring strategies to develop actions for reducing alcohol and tobacco use in this population and, eventually, depressive outcomes.


La depresión es un malestar emocional que trastoca la esfera psicoafectiva y se asocia con distintas conductas de riesgo como el consumo de alcohol y de tabaco, particularmente en la población joven. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar las diferencias que existen respecto a la depresión en cuatro grupos de adolescentes (1. consumidores de alcohol, 2. consumidores de tabaco, 3. no consumidores de alcohol ni de tabaco y 4. consumidores de alcohol y tabaco) estudiantes de Bachillerato o Licenciatura. Se realizó un censo con 116 214 estudiantes, con un promedio de edad, en nivel medio superior, de 15 años y de 19 años en nivel superior. El consumo elevado fue más frecuente en los hombres de ambos niveles educativos. Se hizo un análisis de varianza (ANOVA) factorial para determinar las diferencias en la sintomatologia depresiva entre aquéllos que presentaban consumo elevado de alcohol (cuatro o más copas por ocasión) y de tabaco (cuatro o más cigarrillos al dia) por nivel educativo y sexo. Se encontró sintomatologia depresiva más elevada en los estudiantes de nivel superior (M=9.7), en contraste con los jóvenes de medio superior (M=9.5) (p<0.05). Al comparar la sintomatologia depresiva entre los grupos de consumo, los resultados indicaron mayores puntajes en el grupo de consumidores de alcohol y tabaco (M=11.3), seguidos de usuarios excesivos de tabaco solamente (M=10.7) y de alcohol solamente (M=10.5). Las mujeres de ambos niveles educativos presentaron una mayor sintomatologia depresiva (M=10.3), seguidas de los hombres de nivel superior (M=9) y los hombres de nivel medio superior (M=8.8). Los resultados favorecen el desarrollo de acciones de detección e intervención temprana y el monitoreo de esta población.

ABSTRACT

Introduction Depression and its symptoms are becoming one of the most important health problems worldwide. The impact of depression on the productive life of people, and the burden it represents because of its co-morbidity, is growing. Some authors estimate that depression is the second cause for the global loss of years of healthy life and the first one in developed countries. An increasing proportion of teenage population has mental health issues. Depression and its symptoms are among the most common, but they are not an epidemic problem yet, although spread enough as to maintain interest in its current impact and in its negative consequences over individual health. Depression has a prominent place among mood disorders in Mexico (4.5%), and women are who mostly suffer it (5.8%), which has remained consistent over time. Different difficult situations occur during adolescence along with depression, depressive mood, and depressive symptoms. This situation may be related to changes and processes that occur during this period when individuals cope with situations they cannot handle, which in turn become stressful. Therefore, it is necessary to study and to work with adolescents in order to be able to differentiate affective, cognitive, somatic, and behavioral expressions, which are proper to this stage, from those possibly caused by an illness that could have negative consequences. Adolescent depression influences mood and the way individuals live unpleasant or annoying experiences, thus it affects almost every aspect of life and becomes a risk factor for psychiatric and behavioral problems. However, there are some areas that need more research, for example: the specific characteristics and expressions of the problem including gender comparisons and using designs with special groups. Data show that depression is growing in adolescents; therefore it is a priority to work on detection and prevention to reduce its impact on mental health and to develop cost-effective intervention strategies. One way to do this is using valid-reliable screening tools because they are cheap, and methodologically-logistically useful. The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) has been used in different studies with Mexican adolescents, and has proven to have good psychometric characteristics. The CES-D has never been used with an entire population in a great scale study. The objective of this paper is to measure the validity and reliability of the scale (construct, concurrent, and external validity, as well as internal consistency) in a population of high school and college freshman students from Mexico City. Method Design. The study was a census made with high school and college freshman students during 2009. Data were collected in 22 schools. Population. A sample of 58568 students participated in the census. The mean age was 1 7 years old (±2.7). Most of the students lived in homes with one to four other persons at the moment of the study (55.4%); 86% said that only their father worked at that moment, and 59.4 said that only the mother; 79.7% of the students lived with both parents, and 1 7.9% only with their mother; 57403 students (98.0% of the population) completed the CES-D in the age range of 14-24 years: 27264 (47.5%) men, and 30139 (52.5%) women. Instrument. The Automated Medical Examination (Examen Médico Automatizado-EMA) is a diagnostic questionnaire designed by the General Directorate of Medical Services (Dirección General de Servicios Médicos) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). It is a questionnaire with four self-report forms that collect information about the physical and mental health, the family, and the general context of every student. This information is used to create a diagnosis of vulnerability and a predictive profile for developing prevention programs, as well as research protocols that help in promoting a culture for health care. The CES-D was included for the measurement in 2009. Results Overall internal consistency was adequate (α=.83). Internal consistency was tested by sex; the coefficient was higher for women (α=.84). Factor analysis generated a four-factor solution (explained variance 54.1%); each factor had good internal consistency and theoretical agreement. The scale showed a significant discriminative power for opposite scores (z=-l44.121, p<.001), and a positive significant correlation with the Okasha Suicidality Scale (rΦ=.325, p = .000). A cut-off point of 16 or higher was established to identify students with high depressive symptomatology. 14.7% of the participants in this study had high depressive symptomatology (11.1% men, 1 7.9% women). Conclusions The CES-D is a valid and reliable epidemiological instrument for different populations. Since depression is a complex and dynamic phenomenon, it is important to evaluate the psychometric properties of any instrument used to measure it. The results of this study showed that the CES-D maintains its internal consistency as well as good concurrent-external validity. Coefficients are higher for women and they increase with age; thus, it would be necessary to refine some aspects to measure younger subjects in a more consistent manner. The data proved that CES-D is a useful instrument for distinguishing different levels of depressive symptomatology; this is relevant because the scale is often used in collective contexts, allowing systematic monitoring of depression with good cost-effective results. Monitoring is also important to keep acceptable levels of emotional wellbeing in student population. Development and refinement of instruments such as the CES-D would potentially lead to opportune and reliable detection of adolescents who may be at risk for suffering mental health problems. This would facilitate implementing more stable and continuous prevention and attention programs to reduce the negative impact of depression in the short term.


Introducción La depresión y sus manifestaciones sintomatológicas son parte de los principales problemas de salud entre la población mundial y su impacto en la vida productiva ha aumentado con respecto a otras enfermedades. En México, esta tendencia y sus consecuencias negativas en el desarrollo hacia la adultez justifican la necesidad de atenderla y prevenirla. A través de instrumentos de tamizaje válidos y confiables como la Escala de Depresión del Centro de Estudios Epidemiológicos [Center for Epidemiological Studies of Depression Scale: CES-D) diseñada en 1977 por Radloff, ha sido posible detectar posibles casos clínicos de depresión en diversos estudios con adolescentes escolares. Sin embargo, hasta ahora no se había documentado su comportamiento en una población de estudiantes a gran escala. Método El levantamiento de la información se realizó en agosto de 2009, previo al inicio del ciclo escolar. Se obtuvo información de 57403 alumnos, de los cuales 47.5% fueron hombres y 52.5% mujeres, con una edad promedio de 17 años (±2.7). Instrumento. La CES-D se incorporó en los formatos del Examen Médico Automatizado (EMA) quese utilizaron para realizar el levantamiento censal entre los alumnos de nuevo ingreso a bachillerato o licenciatura. Resultados Consistencia inferna y validez de constructo. La consistencia interna de la escala global mostró un índice satisfactorio (α=0.83). Los índices de contabilidad fueron adecuados para todos los grupos de edad. El análisis factorial con extracción de componentes principales y rotación oblicua arrojó una estructura de cuatro factores con valores Eigen mayores a uno, que explican 54.1% de la varianza; los coeficientes de consistencia interna y concordancia teórica resultaron satisfactorios: Afecto deprimido, Afecto positivo, Somatización e Interpersonal (como un indicador integrado por sólo dos reactivos). Validez concurrente por medio de grupos contrastados. En la prueba de grupos contrastados se compararon los puntajes globales de la CES-D que se situaron por debajo del percent i I 25 versus aquéllos por arriba del percentil 75. Se utilizó una comparación de promedios de Mann-Whitney, que mostró diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los cuartiles contrastados (z = -144.121, p<.001). Validez externa. Se analizó mediante su asociación con la Escala de Expectativas de Vivir-Morir de Okasha (que también se aplica en el EMA), obteniendo una correlación positiva y significativa entre quienes tuvieron sintomatología depresiva elevada y quienes manifestaron deseos de morir (rΦ, = 0.325, p = .000). Detección de sintomatología depresiva elevada. La definición operacional de la sintomatología depresiva elevada se definió con el punto de corte (PC) de la CES-D con base en la media más una desviación estándar (PC> 1 6) con lo que se detectó una frecuencia de sintomatología depresiva elevada de 14.7% (n = 8,197): 11.1% en varones y 1 7.9% en mujeres. Conclusiones Los resultados muestran que en poblaciones tan grandes como la del presente estudio, la CES-D es una herramienta útil y adecuada, breve y fácil de aplicar y analizar para establecer un monitoreo que dé respuesta a una de las necesidades más apremiantes en la población escolar: la detección de la sintomatología depresiva elevada como un aspecto importante del malestar emocional. Sirve, además, para determinar la magnitud de la problemática y arribar a su prevención y, de ser el caso, instrumentar acciones para su tratamiento. La relevancia de los resultados obtenidos radica en que se trata de población escolar que puede llegar a requerir atención y prevención oportunas en salud mental en etapas tempranas de la enfermedad, incluso antes de la confirmación diagnóstica en los servicios especializados. Esta detección deriva en beneficios para la población escolar y en estrategias funcionales de atención adecuada y costo-efectivas.
